What is a Symble?
Symble is a word puzzle in which you find a hidden five-letter word in eight guesses, where each guess is answered not with coloured tiles but with a row of three unexplained symbols that describe the answer's letters rather than yours, and working out what each symbol means is part of the game.
Also known as: symbol Wordle, Wordle without a key.
How do you solve a Symble?
- 01
Understand what a symbol is describing
The symbol in position three describes the answer's third letter, not your third letter. It says whether your guess put that hidden letter exactly there, put it somewhere else in your word, or did not include it at all. The row is a report on the answer, seen through your guess.
- 02
Use the first two guesses to learn the legend
Open with two words that share no letters. Across ten different letters, the most frequent symbol is almost certainly the one meaning absent, since most of any guess misses. A symbol that appears once or twice is exact or elsewhere, and a second guess that keeps one suspected letter in place and moves another separates the two.
- 03
Remember that membership is not counting
A hidden letter is marked as elsewhere if your guess contains it anywhere, however many times. Doubling a letter in your guess does not earn a second mark, so use doubles only to test position, and read a single elsewhere mark on a repeated hidden letter as the answer containing it at least once.
- 04
Lock the legend, then play it as a word game
Once you are sure which shape is exact and which is elsewhere, translate every earlier row into ordinary greens and yellows from the answer's point of view. From there the endgame is normal deduction, and six or so rows remain to finish it.
Common Symble mistakes
- Reading the row as if it were about your guess. The symbol under your S describes the hidden letter in that column, which may be a different letter altogether.
- Trusting a colour. The shapes are coloured per shape for the whole day, and none of the hues means correct or present; the colour is decoration to keep the shapes apart.
- Assuming the rarest symbol is exact. It is often the elsewhere symbol instead, and a wrong legend corrupts every row you have played.
- Doubling a letter to confirm a count. The scoring checks only whether the hidden letter is present in your guess, so a double reveals nothing extra.
Where does Symble come from?
Symble is one of the 2022 wave of games that took the five-letter, daily-word format popularised by Josh Wardle's Wordle and changed the feedback rather than the word. Two things were changed at once: the verdict describes the hidden word's letter in each position instead of the letter you typed there, and the three symbols that carry it are shuffled for every puzzle with no legend.
This site's Symble is its own implementation of that puzzle type. Three shapes are drawn for each day's puzzle from a set of eight, the legend is worked out on the server and withheld until the game ends, and the shapes are coloured only by their identity, never by their meaning, so the colour tells you nothing the shape did not.
How many guesses do you get in Symble?
Eight. Two of them usually go on learning which symbol means what, which is why the budget is larger than the six of an ordinary five-letter game.
Is Symble free, and when is the new puzzle set?
Symble is free with no sign-up. A new word and a new symbol legend are set every day at midnight UTC, and a timed mode lets you solve as many as you can against the clock. An account is only needed for the leaderboard. It plays on a phone as well as a desktop.
