What is a Sedecordle?
Sedecordle is a word puzzle in which you solve sixteen hidden five-letter words at once, with every guess applied to all sixteen boards and twenty-one guesses to finish them all.
Also known as: sixteen-board Wordle, 16 Wordle.
How do you solve a Sedecordle?
- 01
Open with five words that use the whole alphabet
Sixteen boards cannot be solved by deduction from partial coverage; they are solved by reading. Play five fixed openers that between them contain twenty-five different letters, so that after five rows every letter of every answer has been tested somewhere. Twenty-one rows leave sixteen after the opening, which is one per board.
- 02
Read, do not guess
After the opening almost every board can be named from its greens and yellows plus the letters known absent. Work through all sixteen boards and write the answer beside each one you can see. A board you cannot name yet is set aside, not guessed at.
- 03
Solve the named boards in the order that helps the rest
Every solve still lands on the open boards, so among the boards you can name, play first the words containing letters the unread boards still need. Since each solve costs exactly one row, the order costs nothing and the extra colours it drops are free information.
- 04
Keep a running count of rows against open boards
The single number that decides a Sedecordle is rows remaining minus boards open. If it is zero, every remaining guess must be a solve. If it is one or two, you have that many rows to disambiguate the boards that have two candidates. Check it after every guess and never let it go negative.
- 05
Break ties with a shared splitter
When the spare rows exist, use one on a word that contains the deciding letter from as many two-candidate boards as possible. One row that resolves three boards is the only kind of non-solving guess that is affordable at this scale.
Common Sedecordle mistakes
- Opening with three words as in Quordle. Five letters untested across sixteen boards means several boards cannot be read, and each of those costs a row to probe.
- Guessing at an unread board because it is at the top. A wrong guess at sixteen boards is a row lost from a budget that has almost none to spare; solve what you can read and leave the rest until more colours land.
- Losing count. With sixteen boards and twenty-one rows the arithmetic of rows against open boards is the whole game, and an unnoticed deficit is a loss discovered two rows too late.
Where does Sedecordle come from?
Sedecordle is the largest of the multi-board games that grew out of Josh Wardle's 2021 Wordle after its early-2022 surge and sale to The New York Times. Dordle, by Guilherme Töws, doubled the board; Quordle, by Freddie Meyer, made it four; Octordle made it eight; and Sedecordle, named from the Latin for sixteen, pushed it as far as the format has been taken in regular play.
This site's Sedecordle is its own implementation of that puzzle type, on the same engine as the smaller multi-board games at sixteen boards. Words are drawn from the published answer list, a solved board takes no further rows, and the budget is the board count plus five, which is twenty-one.
How many guesses do you get in Sedecordle?
Twenty-one, shared across sixteen boards: the board count plus five, the same rule as every multi-board game here. A board takes no more rows once it is solved.
Is Sedecordle free, and when do the words change?
Sedecordle is free and needs no sign-up. Sixteen new words are set every day at midnight UTC. The multi-board games have no timed mode, since a single Sedecordle takes longer than the longest timed run. An account is only needed for the leaderboard. It plays on a phone as well as a desktop.
