How to play Quordle

What is a Quordle?

Quordle is a word puzzle in which you solve four five-letter words at once, with every guess applied to all four boards and nine guesses to finish them all.

Also known as: four-board Wordle, quadruple word game.

How do you solve a Quordle?

   Play three fixed openers

   With four boards, a planned opening of three words that between them use fifteen different letters is close to essential. Common letters spread across the three give every board a foothold, and after three rows you can usually see at least one word outright. Choose your three in advance and play them regardless of the early colours.

   Solve boards in order of certainty

   After the openers, rank the boards by how many candidates remain. Solve the one you are surest of first, because a wrong guess there is only a guess spent, while a wrong guess on a board with many candidates is a guess spent and nothing learned elsewhere. A solved board closes and stops taking rows.

   Choose finishing words for their side effects

   When a board has two candidates, look at which of them tests letters still unknown on the other boards. The guess that solves board two and also places a yellow on board four is worth more than the one that only solves board two. With nine rows for four words, every row must earn its keep on more than one board.

   Budget backwards from the hardest board

   Count how many rows the most open board will need once the others are done. If three boards are close and the fourth still has eight candidates, spend one row on a word that splits those eight rather than solving a nearly-finished board, so that the final rows are not a gamble.

   Use the keyboard as a coarse filter only

   The shared keyboard shows the best result each letter has earned on any board, which is useful for spotting letters never tried but misleading for placement. A key that is green because of board one may be absent on board three. Read the individual boards when choosing a candidate.

Common Quordle mistakes

• Reacting to the first board's colours. Changing your opening plan because board one showed two greens gives up coverage that the other three boards still need.
• Solving the board you happen to be looking at. Boards should be finished in order of how few candidates they have left, not in the order they are drawn.
• Spending a row on a word that could only ever be the answer to one board. With nine rows for four words there is no room for a guess that tests nothing else.

Where does Quordle come from?

Quordle was released in January 2022 by Freddie Meyer, following Dordle's two boards with four. It arrived while Josh Wardle's Wordle, released in 2021, was at the height of its spread and just before The New York Times bought it. Quordle became the best known of the multi-board games, and Octordle and Sedecordle were the escalations that followed it.

This site's Quordle is its own implementation of that puzzle type, sharing one engine with Dordle, Octordle and Sedecordle. The four words are drawn from the published answer list, every guess is scored against each board that is still open, and the budget is the board count plus five, which is nine.
