What is an Octordle?
Octordle is a word puzzle in which you solve eight hidden five-letter words at once, with every guess applied to all eight boards and thirteen guesses to finish them all.

How do you solve an Octordle?

Commit to a four-word opening
Eight boards need broad coverage before any deduction, so play four fixed openers that between them use twenty different letters, including every vowel. After four rows nearly every board has several greens and yellows, and the remaining nine rows are for closing. Do not deviate from the opening whatever the colours show.

Sweep for the boards that are already solved
With twenty letters tested, several boards can be read outright. Go through all eight after the opening and list which words you can name with certainty. Play those first, in any order: each one costs a single row, and each also drops colours onto the boards still open.

Treat the remaining boards as one pool of unknown letters
The six letters you have not tried are shared across every open board. When two or three boards each have a gap, find a candidate for one of them that contains the untried letters the others need. One row that fills a gap on board five and tests a letter for boards two and seven is the kind of guess that makes thirteen rows enough.

Never guess with two candidates on more than one board
A coin flip on one board is affordable; a coin flip on three boards is a loss. When several boards are each down to two words, spend a row on a word that contains the deciding letter from each pair, so that one row settles all of them and the following rows are certain.
Common Octordle mistakes
- Solving boards from the opening colours instead of finishing the opening. The fourth opener is what makes the later boards readable; skipping it saves a row now and costs several later.
- Trusting the shared keyboard for placement. It shows the best result a letter has earned on any of the eight boards, which for eight boards is nearly every letter lit; use it only to see which letters remain untried.
- Scanning the boards in the same order every time. The board nearest the top gets solved first by habit, while a board at the bottom that could have been named on row five is left until the rows run out.
- Guessing a word that is a candidate for one board and nothing else when the row count is tight. Late in the game every row must either solve a board or split candidates on several.
Where does Octordle come from?
Octordle appeared in 2022 as the next escalation after Quordle, which Freddie Meyer had released with four boards in January of that year, and Dordle, Guilherme Töws's two-board original. All of them descend from Josh Wardle's 2021 Wordle, sold to The New York Times in early 2022, and all keep its scoring exactly while multiplying the answers.
This site's Octordle is its own implementation of that puzzle type, running on the same engine as the other multi-board games at eight boards. Words come from the published answer list, a solved board closes and takes no more rows, and the budget follows the shared rule of boards plus five, which is thirteen.
How many guesses do you get in Octordle?
Thirteen, shared across all eight boards: the board count plus five. A board stops taking rows the moment it is solved, so the later rows go to fewer and fewer boards.
Is Octordle free, and when do the words change?
Octordle is free and needs no sign-up. Eight new words are set every day at midnight UTC. There is no timed mode for the multi-board games. An account is only needed for the leaderboard. It plays on a phone as well as a desktop.
